Our August 2006 Case of Month described a paroxysmal cramping or hypertonicity syndrome in Border Terriers (click to see video). Reports suggested that affected dogs responded to dietary changes, and feeding Science K/D diet (Hills Pet Nutrition, Topeka, KS), Eukanuba Early Stage Kidney Diet (The Iams Company, Dayton, OH), and lamb and rice. A recent paper (abstract below) describes a gluten sensitive movement disorder with a favorable responsive to a guten free diet.

Case Discussion

Meet Bridie
Bridie, a Border Terrier, was rescued at 18 months of age. Almost immediately the clinical signs of muscle cramping were evident that immobilized her. Extensive testing and biopsies revealed a liver abnormality and a prescription diet was prescribed. Bridie was on this diet for many years but still displayed clinical signs. Over the past 2-3 years the cramping episodes become less frequent and are now currently rare. She is now 12 years of age, doing very well and eating regular kibbles.
